Meridian Audio Acquires Sooloos

New York City, USA and Cambridge, England – December 4, 2008

Meridian Audio Ltd – British manufacturer of the finest digital audio and video systems has
announced its acquisition of US company Sooloos LLC, the innovative media-server
manufacturer. The closing which took place today was for an undisclosed amount.

According to Meridian CEO Tim Ireland, “Meridian supplies the very finest audio and video
installations. As the market evolves toward download and streaming content and more
sophisticated forms of control, we have been seeking the right partner to widen our scope
and enable us to further excite our customers. Combining Meridian and Sooloos takes both
over many hurdles; the two companies share striking similarities in culture, product
philosophy, pursuit of excellence and market approach.”

The admiration is entirely mutual. Peter Wellikoff, Sooloos COO and a three-decade veteran
of high-end consumer electronics says, “We’ve successfully established Sooloos as the most
technically advanced and sophisticated innovator in this still very young media-server and
systems sphere. Now, under the Meridian corporate umbrella, we gain advantages in global
market access, as well as a network of engineering and technology resources that are
unequalled anywhere.”

Meridian’s culture of innovation and shaping new technologies dates to its inception in the
early 1980s, when founders Bob Stuart and Allen Boothroyd launched the world’s first
“audiophile CD player,” effectively creating, and then proving, the concept of high-end digital
audio. Meridian has since led the way in audio with its unequalled compact disc and digital-
loudspeaker designs, audio processing, reference projection systems and high-resolution
multichannel audio. Numerous other world firsts include the first audiophile and videophile
iPod® docking solution, and integrated tabletop CD/DVD, AM/FM/DAB home entertainment
sound systems of unprecedented performance.

Bob Stuart, Meridian’s Chairman and CTO is very enthusiastic about the Sooloos
acquisition. “Our two companies have been following one another’s success for some time,”
says Stuart. “We share very similar philosophies and passions for music and total design
excellence. There’s also a powerful synergy between the skills and experience of our
respective teams, which will enable us to build together outstanding and definitive high-end
digital entertainment systems.”

“Sooloos was founded to give people an experience, to put the fun back into listening to
music,” says Enno Vandermeer, Sooloos founder and CEO. “By joining the Meridian and
Sooloos teams, that experience grows exponentially. Now the most fun, interactive and social
way to access your music, photos, and video is also the best-sounding and most visually
stunning digital media system on the market.”

In the immediate future, Sooloos and Meridian operations will proceed with only modest
changes. Sooloos will retain offices in New York City. The R&D teams are already working
closely together. Sooloos founders Enno Vandermeer and Danny Dulai plus key executives
including Peter Wellikoff and Sandro Pugliese are excited to remain with the company. Our
goal is one excellent enterprise.

The Sooloos products, fully retaining the Sooloos brand and identity, will be distributed in the
US by Meridian America Inc. in Atlanta. The UK market will be coordinated through Meridian
Audio in England. The international sales teams will work together to continue the
development of an unrivalled network of distributors serving specialist resellers and custom
integrators around the world.

Looking ahead together the company plans new products, bringing the world entirely new
levels of sonic experience, ergonomic elegance and system interoperability.

Eftersom systemet nu börjar hitta ut på marknaden så kan det vara på sin plats att informera lite mer om det.

Meridian Soooloos är sedan uppköpet fintrimmat av M vilket gett lite ljudmässiga förbättringar samt möjligeheten att kunna integreras med övriga Meridian-prylar. En mycket lyckad utveckling av ett redan fantastiskt system.



Meridian Sooloos består idag av 3 delar:

Control, systemet styrs av en kontrollenhet som idag betår av en 17" touch-skärm.
Man kan även styra det med enklare lösningar som tex Ipod-touch eller Iphone, men då tappar man givetvis en hel del funktioner, inte minst grafiskt.

Source, spelaren finns i olika utföranden med valmöjlighet på antal zooner och utgångar.
Källan spelar materialet men nästan all mjukvara ligger i kontrollpanelen vilket ger överlägsen snabbhet och användarvänlighet.

Store, lagringsenheten är uppbyggd med säkerhetskopiering och helt utbyggnadsbar.
Man måste inte använda orginaldiscar utan systemet fungerar utmärkt med vanliga discar från tex Seagate.

Dessa tre delar går att kombinera på olika sätt för olika nivåer och möjligheter, men som Gizmo säger så går en standard konfiguration på strax över 100kkr om man har en större musiksamling.

Istället för att ha infon utspritt i många trådar så kan vi väl lika gärna fortsätta diskussionen här?

Vi på The Rock har beställt hem en Control 10 för att styra en Source Five (med 5 zooner) och en Twinstore för att ha att materialet på. Går allt som förväntat så dyker det upp hos oss om ett par veckor, men räkna med ytterligare någon vecka inna allt är "up and running" med kabeldragning och installation som sak hinnas med utanför de ordinarie öppettiderna.

Inom en månad bör ni iaf kunna beskåda detta systemet hos oss. Då tillsammans med mycket annat godis från Meridian.

Ljudtema hade två rum som vanligt på Highend mässan och i det rummet med Meridian DSP8000 så fanns även Sooloos systemet. I rummet kom inte alls högtalarna till sin rätta och kungen blev klart Sooloos systemet. Det är ett väldigt stort och rejält system och rätt synd på prislappen annars hade själv ägt ett för länge sen. Det fortsätter att imponera i handhavande utan i stort sett nån konkurrans.

En ny version med en smidigare lite mindre platta som har samma prestanda vore väldigt intressant.

Ipad går att använda som fjärr. Den är lite smidigare.

Den kommer definitivt blir ett bättre komplement. Dock hade jag helst sett en liknande produkt fast dedikerad för ändamålet.

Ipaden kommer bli fantastisk som fjärr till squeezecenter! Jag fundrade länge om jag behöver en, och nu har jag kommit på att det inte räcker med Iphonen som fjärr. Jag måste ha en ipad + stativ till den!

Man får verkligen hoppas på att det kommer nåt riktigt bra ihop med iPad. Skulle kunna lyfta användandet rejält.

Sen är Sooloos fortfarande en drömprodukt för mig och ihop med film så vore det ultimata.

Tycker fortfarande att JRiver Media Center + Netremote på en HTPC är ett vettigare val (framförallt med tanke på priset!).
Har kört det under många år och det har funkat kanon!

JRiver Media Centers databasmotor är grym (väl värt att sätta sig in i hur avancerade saker man kan göra med den, även om den har det mesta uppsatt från början).

Har nu börjat köra en HDI DUNE Base 3.0 ...
Musikspelaren i den är tyvärr under all kritik, får hoppas det görs något åt den (annars får man väl ta tag i det själv).
